Santiago de Chile Metro - line 5 Maipú

SENER has carried out the preliminary engineering for the extension of line 5 of the Santiago Metro, from the existing Quinta Normal station to Plaza Maipú, infrastructure projects, tunnel (line and stations) and viaduct (line and stations) as well as the architecture, station equipment, the comprehensive functional and railway operational study, in addition to the preliminary design projects for all the different railway systems and the detailed design for rubber tire track.
This new 14.2 km section incorporates a 3.5 km long viaduct and ten new stations (7 in tunnels and 3 on viaduct), as well as the urban integration of all the stations and the elevated section on the viaduct.
Operational studies indicate that the service headway will have to be less than 120 seconds (during morning peak hours) and will require a total fleet of at least 48 trains, each with an average capacity of 1,000 passengers.
Due to SENER's extensive experience in the design of underground mass transit systems, some technological innovations were proposed such as the implementation of a multi-service network based on Gigabit Ethernet and IP communication technologies that support all communications, signalling, automatic driving and control systems.

Due to the great experience of SENER in designing underground systems, some technological innovations were proposed like the implementation of a multiservice network based on Gigabit Ethernet and IP communication technologies that support all communication, signaling, automatic driving and command systems.
Within the scope of the contract, SENER carried out the following services:
- Planning studies.
- Functional studies.
- Operation Studies.
- Stations equipment.
- Expansion of the existing workshop to accommodate the additional fleet of rolling stock.
- Rubber tire track and third rail.
- Electrification system (third rail) and traction substation network.
- ATP / ATC / ATO signalling systems.
- Automatic driving system.
- Operation and maintenance control system.
- Telecommunications system.
- Automatic fare collection system.
Although the scope of the project consisted of developing the preliminary engineering for the complete extension of line 5, the only detailed project that was developed was the track (rubber tire), which incorporates a third energy collection rail. Previously, it was necessary to define the general track layout of the extension, based on the demand and operation studies developed specifically for this work.
